Newport Goddard Tea Table

This example of early Newport craftsmanship was copied from an original in an old Rhode Island family. Most probably from the Goddard shop, the openwork talons and finely done knee carving are exceptional, but the repetitive use of ogee curves and simple molding really make this table an icon of Colonial design. The top is worked from the solid and the wood is mahogany throughout. This table now resides in the space left when the original was sold at auction.
