Last week I had Tom and Mike building small chests, Steve carving a basket of fruit, and Sam Breed carving his first Newport shell. I took a bunch of pics of the various people and their projects:
Tom started out dovetailing his draw blades into the case and then began cutting dovetails on his draw parts. We stack them up to speed up the process. The feet of the chest are glued together on the bench and then positioned on the case. A triangular block will be glued in the corner before the feet are glued on. Before the draws are glued up, the fronts are fit into the openings and hammer veneered.a cockbead will be added later.
Sam began the day with his shell shaped and the pattern laid out. He then cut the divisions between the lobes with a v-tool, making the cuts deeper with a few passes. The area that will be the concave lobes is flattened out before the fillet is located with another cut. The concave lobes are cut with three different gouges and then the convex ones are shaped with straight and backbent gouges. The rosette is then modelled with a v-tool and gouges.
Steve had roughed out the shape of the basket of fruit the day before and was shaping the leaves, fruit and grapes as the day progressed.
A productive day for all involved-Al

Tim- The box is through DT'd and the base molding covers the ends of the tails at the bottom of the box. The battens at the top are half-blind. Draw construction is half-blinds and just veneered on the fronts. Draw runners are glued to the dustboard behind the blades to guide the draws.-Al

Hey Mr breed, Hope your Memorial day went well.I have a couple of questions about the chest. You say that you hammer veneer the drawer fronts.Do you make the box using thru dovetails and add veneer making up a sort of half blind dovetail look or do you do the half blinds and then add another layer(veneer) ?Second I saw in photo's that when you put in the verticle drawer dividers do you back them with secondary wood or do you leave as is.Just curious what keeps drawer from shifting from side to side. Thanks and have a nice day.
