One of the things that drew me to this site is-- yea you guessed carving. He needs no introduction here so its fair to say - most of the interest is connected to the carving elements that Al Breed has mastered and the techniques/methods he uses to achieve such exceptional results.

I was wondering what carving tools some of the builders use to create their work? I have a collection of "odds and ends" that have served me well for low relief carving that I have done on long rifles but they seem to be ... lacking in the higher relief work like shells and ball and claw carvings that I see here.

Questions:

1. What are the tools you have found other than the Swiss made/Pfeils?

2. Have you found other suppliers to purchase Pfeils other than Woodcraft?

I don't know it I am asking the wrong questions but  I would like to find some carving tools in the #3 sweep(Pfeil scale) without lining the Woodcraft pockets. Any inputs or suggestions would be appreciated.

Dan,

No carving expert here.  I tend to follow Al's advise and buy what I need as I go.  Most of my carving tools are bought new, and most are Swiss made from Woodcraft.  The first ones I ever bought were Ashley Illes from Tools for Working Wood, but I think these are even a bit more expensive than the Swiss made.  I have gotten a few old ones off ebay, and if you buy a few at a time, they are cheaper than new, unless they are some kind of collectors item.
