Cabinetmaking and Gilding
10/22/2007 to 10/26/2007
For the first time I'm pleased to offer a course that will combine woodworking and the traditional art of water gilding,
the preferred method of gilded finish for interior decorative arts pieces. The week will be divided between the wood shop,
where we will build a Chippendale mirror with carved elements, and Ron Tuveson's gilding studio, where students will
learn the skills needed to gild the carved elements of their mirror. Ron has over thirty years of experience in the art of
water and oil gilding and frame restoration, and he and his son Jared will cover the basics of water gilding and burnishing
as well as reverse glass and oil gilding and the use of bronze powders as interest dictates. This course in an exceptional
opportunity to learn a fascinating and unique skill from an articulate and experienced teacher. Two evening sessions will be
part of the gilding segment of the class. Size will be limited to six students.
Tool list for class:
This will include a gilder's kit with 23CT gold leaf and the tools, brushes and other materials needed for gilding.
Wood working tools will be provided.
