Introduction to carving

06/11/2006 to 06/15/2007

Beginning with the earliest 17th century examples, American furniture has been ornamented with carving. Chairs, chests, clocks mirrors and beds have all benefited from carved elements. By breaking seemingly complex carvings down into their basic elements and tool cuts this course will teach the student how to lay out and execute shells, rosettes, fans and flowers in an efficient manner. Mastering these basic techniques will allow the student to integrate these carved elements into furniture as well as architectural elements such as mantles. Being comfortable with basic carved ornamentation will open up a whole new range of projects for the students who complete this introductory course.
